Welcome to the Phillynet FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). Here you’ll find answers to the most common questions that we’re asked.

Can I share my Internet connection with others living in the house?

The standard connection that you get with normal subscription is intended for use with one computer at a time. If there are many people sharing a house, we can install a multi-user system for you that provides always-on connectivity to all users. Please contact phillynet.service@campustech.net for details.

How fast is Phillynet Internet Access?

Phillynet provides three different Internet access packages that run at different speeds.

With our Standard Internet service, the connection between your computer and the Phillynet network is 3 MB per second download speed. This is faster that dial-up, and considerably faster than cable modems that have to share their bandwidth on the network.

Want more? The Phillynet Xtreme provides up to 10 megabits download, and uses Ethernet technology.

Want less? The Phillynet Dash service is amazingly inexpensive at $19.95 per month, and offers always-on connectivity at much better than dial-up speeds (384 thousand bits per second or 384K).

The actual performance when connected to the Internet will vary according to Internet traffic on the Public network, the number of people accessing the web site that you are trying to reach, and many other factors outside our control - but it will be as fast or faster on average than any other broadband service of equivalent speed that you can obtain in Philadelphia.

I’ve heard that Phillynet service is ‘always on’ - what does this mean, exactly?

With Phillynet Internet Access, Xtreme and Dash, you are always connected to the network - you don’t need to dial up. This means instant access to the Internet.

Do I need a phone line to get Phillynet Internet Service?

you do not need a phone line (from Phillynet or anyone else) to get any Phillynet Internet connection. We will provided dedicated wires for your Internet connection.

What do I need to have on my computer to use Phillynet Internet connections?

you need a computer with an Ethernet NIC and the necessary software that you will need to browse the web (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox). We will install everything else. If in doubt, please ask.

Can I run a server?

you should not run a public Internet server unless you have a commercial subscription, which provides you with the necessary tier of use. Please refer to the Acceptable use policy.
